Guidance by role

The right next step depends on your role.

Concussion safety is a team effort. Choose the role closest to yours, then go straight to the trusted information you need.

Athlete

You know when something feels different. Speaking up gives the people around you the chance to help.

  • Tell a trusted adult if you feel different after a hit, fall, or collision.
  • Stop participating and do not try to diagnose the injury yourself.
  • Follow the plan from your healthcare and school support teams before returning fully.

Parent or caregiver

You know what is normal for your child and can connect healthcare, school, and team support.

  • Watch for danger signs and arrange evaluation by a healthcare professional.
  • Share new or changing symptoms with the healthcare provider and school.
  • Support the individual recovery plan without rushing a return to normal activities.

Coach or team support

Your job is not to diagnose a concussion. Your job is to make the safe call and protect the athlete.

  • Remove the athlete from participation when a concussion is suspected.
  • Check for danger signs and notify the parent or caregiver.
  • Keep the athlete out that day and until a healthcare professional clears the return process.
